Notes

  • Use espresso with chocolate, caramel, or nutty notes for the best balance.
  • Choose fresh orange juice for a brighter, cleaner flavor.
  • Add the orange juice and tonic before the espresso for attractive layers.
  • Stir gently to avoid losing the tonic’s carbonation.
  • Twist orange peel over the glass for extra citrus aroma.
  • Add a little simple syrup if the drink tastes too bitter.
  • Use large ice cubes to reduce dilution.

One of the best things about an Orange Espresso Tonic is how easy it is to customize.

Once you have the basic combination of espresso, tonic water, citrus, and ice, you can experiment with different fruits, sweeteners, and flavor additions to create your own version.

For a deeper citrus flavor and striking color, try a Blood Orange Espresso Tonic by replacing regular orange juice with blood orange juice. A Grapefruit Espresso Tonic is another great option if you prefer a slightly more bitter and tart drink. For something sweeter and smoother, add a small amount of vanilla syrup to make a Vanilla Orange Espresso Tonic.

You can also add fresh herbs such as mint or rosemary for a more aromatic drink, or stir a pinch of cinnamon or cardamom into the espresso for a gently spiced version. If you want to reduce the sugar, skip the simple syrup and use a low-sugar tonic water.

Decaf espresso works just as well if you want to enjoy the drink later in the day without as much caffeine.
